AKROTIRI
Akrotiri is a community of Limassol district, rich in history and natural beauty. It is located southwest of the Limassol salt marsh and northwest of the Akrotiri embankment, while the entire territory of the community is located on the British military bases in Cyprus.
Regarding the historicity of the place, the first settlement of Cyprus was found at the site of Aetokremmos during the Pre-Neolithic era. In addition, archaeological sites from the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Early Christian periods have been discovered in the wider area of Akrotiri. 1500 carved tombs have been identified on its southern shores, while a cult building from the early Byzantine period has recently come to light.
Of great interest are the findings of the Center for Environmental Education, regarding the existence of hippos in the first pre-neolithic years in Akrotiri. It is reported that the hippos were exterminated by the first inhabitants, in their attempt to meet the needs for food, clothing and tools.
