YPSONAS MUNICIPALITY
Ypsonas is a municipality in the Limassol district in Cyprus and one of the six municipalities of greater Limassol. The origin of its name is unknown, but it probably derives from the gypsum that existed in the area since Byzantine times. Ypsonas existed as a settlement since medieval times and is mentioned by De Mas Latri as a village that belonged to the king of Cyprus during the Frankish rule. The village was probably destroyed in 1426 by the Mamluks or in 1570 by the Turks.
During the period of the British occupation, many residents of Lofos settled permanently in Ypsonas, leaving their villages. Today, Ypsonas follows steady economic and population growth and has turned into a modern community. At the same time, it tries to preserve its traditional houses, reminding residents and visitors of its rich history.
