TRACHONI
Trachoni, 8 km southwest of Limassol, has a history that goes back to the Middle Ages, as evidenced by old maps that mark it as "Tracori". De Mas Latry mentions it as a fief of the Knights Templar in the 13th century, where after the dissolution of the order in the early 14th century, it passed to the Knights of St. John.
The name of the village comes from the ancient Greek word "trahon", which means rough and stony ground, as noted by Strabo. Its history reveals that it was probably founded during the Byzantine years. The Turkish Cypriot residents in 1958 adopted the name Kaykale, which means stone fort. Trachoni maintains its long history, testifying to the region's rich cultural heritage.
